Improve your knowledge on Suicide Risk Assessment and Treatment with this course. Every year, more than 700,000 people take their own life and there are many more people who attempt suicide. It occurs throughout the lifespan and was the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds globally in 2019 Suicide is a global phenomenon that affects all parts of the world; in fact, over 77% of global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income nations in 2019 (WHO, 2021). It should be noted that there is no single cause for suicide. It most often occurs when stressors and health issues converge to create an experience of hopelessness and despair. Conditions like depression, anxiety and substance problems, especially when unaddressed, increase risk for suicide. The statistics illustrate how serious of a public health issue suicide is. But, they can be prevented with timely, evidence-based interventions. This course aims provides the reader with the right tools to better understand suicide assessment and treatment.

After completing this training you will be able to:

• Identify a historical perspective on suicide.
• Identify rates of suicide overall and for various demographic groups.
• Describe the major causes and risk factors for suicide.
• Outline the relative risks for various mental disorders, subtypes, and situational factors.
• Describe the role of mental disorders and life situations in suicide.
• Summerize the relationship of co morbidities in risk.
• Apply knowledge from this course to practice and/or other professional contexts.

Robert A. Yourell, LMFT is a licensed psychotherapist who has been in the mental health field from the mid 1970's.
