Introduction
Mental health professionals encounter adolescent behavior issues in a variety of contexts. These include family and individual therapy, high schools, residential facilities, group settings, and other institutional and treatment settings.
Adolescence is a very turbulent time for most teens. Their bodies are changing as well as their hormones. The period of adolescents is from about age 13 to about age 20. Adolescence is known as a time of confusion regarding identity and roles, as well as a time of potential conflict with parents and other authority figures. Many adolescents engage in some behaviors that challenge societal norms. This can include delinquent behaviors. A significant percentage of adolescents, however, have significant psychiatric or emotional problems that can hobble their transition into a fulfilling adulthood.
