Course Description

Federal regulations set the standards for providing care in a safe and secure manner. Now more than ever, with the advent of electronic health records (EHR), it is critical to ensure that regulations around confidentiality are understood and properly applied. This course is designed to help substance abuse treatment providers maintain a free flow of information and understand the 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA regulations in the context of health care reform.

Learning Objectives

After completing this training the professional will be able to:

• Describe the purpose of 42 CFR Part 2.
• Name who has to follow 42 C.F.R. Part 2 and what information it protects.
• Identify what types of disclosures of information are generally prohibited by 42 C.F.R. Part 2.
• Identify the relationship of HIPAA and state laws to 42 CFR Part 2.
• Describe key exceptions to confidentiality rule
• Apply knowledge from this course to practice and/or other professional contexts.
